Two more items of Just 1 Page business:

1. Wrapping up the charity stuff.

Copies of the mag will be given away to attendees at the Birmingham International Comics Show, and you will be able to buy some of the original artwork there, with the eBay auction happening in October- Early November this year.

This Shaun of the Dead statue will be auctioned in time for Halloween (yes I said that last year)

Also at BrumICS will be the second Kryptonite Factor Quiz.
Unfortunately it looks like Budgie cannot attend so there will be another co-presenter for me (we are calling him The Budgie of whatever Earth was the evil one).
I have last year's quiz uploaded if anyone is interested. (It's a big file if you're on slowband.)

2. Comica 2007 at the ICA - 20th & 21st October.

Once again, Paul Gravett is hosting ComICA including a 24 Hour Comic at the ICA
(overnight accommodation at the ICA has not been forthcoming however, so please let me know if you'd like somewhere to stay.)

Subject to confirmation, 24 Hour Contributors will be on the guest list, so places are limited.
Megacollaborators won't be able to get in for free, but buy a ticket for one of the talks f0r £^ or a day pass and you will be taking part in a historical event !

Why are creators everywhere so inspired by Japanese comics? Award-winning Paul Duffield, artist on The Tempest from the Manga Shakespeare range, and other contributors to the latest Best New Manga volume join editor Ilya to suggest possible answers.

Comica Collaboratories (4pm - 5pm)
Webcomics wizard Daniel Merlin Goodbrey (Last Sane Cowboy & Other Stories) guides you through experiments in online comics, including cutting-edge blog collaborations by Lingua Comica's participants.

Manhua: China Comics Now (5.30pm - 6.30pm)
East beats West? Learn why Chinese comics are on the rise, at home and abroad, from China's Yishan Li (Spirit Marked), Hong Kong's Mr Clement (Yeah Kou Phobia) and other artists and guests. Presented in association with the Asia-Europe Foundation.

A new year, A new start for Just 1 Page

Total disillusionment with the whole Just 1 Page business is behind me know, so here's this year's plan.

1) No more Just 1 Page publications from me.
If anyone wants to take over with a more commercial approach - ie £1500 corporate sponsorship to pay the costs rather than my pocket (or any one else's pocket) - I'll be glad to hear from you.

2) Clear the backlog of auctions.
The auctions will start after the Birmingham International Comics Show, where I will be giving away as many copies of Just 1 Page as I can carry up there. (We will have no table, so this probably means putting them into the Freeby Bags.)

3) At least one 24 Minute Comic.
I've proposed three: Caption, in Oxford on Sunday 12th August; Brum ICS in October (tbc) and one other subject to the next point. If anyone wants to have a go at one elsewhere, let me know and I'll help if possible.

4) The 24 Hour Comic at the ICA.
Hopefully now they can let us stay in the venue overnight, or at least find a venue where we can.

24 Hour ComICA last weekend

spent most of the weekend at the ICA, talking comics to a combination of comics people (marshalled by Paul Gravett for international 24 Hour Comic Day) and people who wandered up from the gallery below lured by my sign that artists were drawing upstairs ;-)

I missed all of Paul's talks because I was mostly selling comics for the people who had attended to take part in the 24 Hour Comic, but I got to meet Frank Skinner who turns out to be as nice as all the other Baggies fans I know. And has been expanding his knowledge of comics that (like many of the ICA regulars) he'd left behind years ago.

The 24 Hour collective came from the spectrum of indie comics in the UK (ie not The Beano), and I currently have half a dozen of their comics waiting for scanning over the weekend ...

As some of you will already know, this weekend is the official global 24
Hour Comics Day.

I will be taking part in the event being held at the ICA on The Mall:

Official UK 24 Hour Comics Day Kick-off
6 October 2006
This one-day worldwide phenomenon of comics creativity, brainchild of
Amercian comics guru Scott McCloud, author of Understanding Comics, hits
the UK. Be there when the Comica team of cartoonists including Steven
Appleby from The Guardian and Telegraph, David Baillie, Matt Broersma,
Umisen-Yamasen Studio (Chi-Tan, Inko and Hepi Ichiko) and Le Gun crew
start creating their spontaneous 24-page 24-hour comics.

In case you’re not familiar with the concept – the participants each
have 24 hours to write and draw a complete 24-page comic (minus all the
time spent eating, weeing, brushing their teeth etc.). Just to put that
in context my last 24-page comic took me just over a calendar month.

While I’m very much looking forward to the challenge, I think it would
make it much more worthwhile if I could raise some money for a good
cause in the process, so I am seeking sponsorship.

All donations will go to the comics based charity Just One Page, helmed
by the tireless Adrian Brown, which for the last four years has raised
funds for a variety of causes through comics related activities and
publications. This year the worthy recipient is Childline UK.

I’ve included a handy guide for those whose maths skills have failed
them this morning.

10p – 24 pages completed - £2.40
20p – 24 pages completed - £4.80
50p – 24 pages completed - £12.00
£1 – 24 pages completed - £24.00

So if you were to sponsor me 10p a page, your final donation (assuming I
complete the challenge) will be £2.40. Of course you can donate whatever
you want, or can afford to, and any amount at all will be very
gratefully received. All supporters will, of course, receive a copy of
the comic I finally produce after the 24 hours.

Also anyone who feels like coming down to the ICA (it’s just off
Trafalgar Square) to cheer us on is more than welcome. (I think it’s
being filmed, too – so you might get some screen time).

The Wond'rous Mr Jesse Farrell has come up with two superb statues for Just 1 Page, and they'll be auctioned in April, so be there !

Thanks to the 30 or so people who have been in touch - an abundance of Brazilians, which is only appropriate for a World Cup issue.

The Just 1 Page itinerary is as follows:
March 31st - Deadline for your contributions (of course some of you will miss this, PLEASE start now !)

April 1st - Final weeks of Just 1 Page 3 auctions - including the remaining artwork, plus a very nice extra one of Batman & Poison Ivy by Bevis Musson, plus the most excellent statues you can see above.

May 12th/13th/14th - Just 1 Page 4 on sale at the Comic Expo in Bristol. This time it will be something of a football fanzine effort to encourage cross over customers !

I've had less than a dozen people say they will do a page for the World Cup themed Just 1 Page 4. (UPDATE: Now there are around 30, thanks for the response)

The football theme for the final edition of Just 1 Page seems to have scared off a few people who've contributed before. But never mind, all the more room for reprinting my old football fanzine gags.

Any way, as ever, the invitation is open to any reasonable artist to donate a one page comic strip or pin up on the theme of Football and Comics.

That means any of the following:

Direct tributes to (or parodies of) the classic football comics of days gone by. (Roy of the Rovers, Billy's Boots, Hotshot Hamish, Billy The Fish)

Combos of comics characters and football.
(The Hulk will be appearing as a goalkeeper, Captain Marvel may well be Bryan Robson once more, Ronaldo as Plug, Robbie Fowler as Zenith, Tony Rollinson's ADVENTURES OF PEOPLE WHO LOOK LIKE ARSENAL PLAYERS, John Motson as The Watcher, What if Escape to Victory had featured The Invaders, Ashley Cole as Sub-Mariner.)

Actual cartoons of footballers which I will use as "cigarette card" fodder.
I need some of these for all the teams involved except for England, whose squad is spoken for. These pics can be quite small, 9 on an A4 page would do nicely.

Anything else.

And you know, you could always just add a football into a sketch you've already done ...

Oh, I want someone to write short parody team summaries like you always get in the run up to the World Cup.
The deadline will be 31st of March, and at this rate there won't be enough to be going on with, so I don't want to waste anyone's time. Please let me know if you can't take part (or don't want to) in what will be my final Just 1 Page.

Some of you know that Andrew Wildman's Drawing the World Together charity is going to be prominent at Bristol and while the two projects have different emphasis - J1P is the magazine prepared in advance, plus ebay auctions - there's not going to be room for two such projects (and not enough pencils in your pencil case I hear busy artists cry).

Finally, a reminder of that theme, which as always is open to very liberal interpretation.

And as the theme is the World Cup I am looking for people to represent each country in the tournament (Ghana, Brazil, Netherlands and USA are already added to England, and yes of course I will accept contributions from Wales, Scotland, Eire and Northern Ireland :-) or any other country that is not playing in the world cup.

24 Minute Mini-comic #2 invites contributors

We can now confirm the date for 24 Minute Minicomic #2.

At The Comic Expo
Brighton, Saturday 19th November 2005 all contributors welcome.

All you will need to do is draw for less than half an hour !

Here is the online version of the first one, with cover by Roger Langridge and a host of web comic and small press stars,

Once again we'll have a story written by Mike Carey, similar format to the first one - ie 24 pages scripted in advance with two lines of rhyming couplet each.

Each artist will be given an A4 page with a time of day and two lines of the story. In order to aid story-telling, this time we will try and seat everyone in page order so you'll be sat net to the folks who are drawing the pages before and after yours.

It's free to take part, first 25 people who contact me will take preference, but there's a good chance that we'll need reserves, so if you turn up on the day, you'll get to draw something.

The plan is to find a local photocopy shop so that limited copies of the finished comic will be on sale by the end of the day. The story will then appear on-line and in the next edition of Just 1 Page (due May 2006).

If you missed the last one, you can find out more about the rules, about the first event and about The UK Web & Minicomix Thing where the event took place earlier in 2005.

This is hoped to be an event that in future will be linked with the annual Drawing Power campaign that is being waged during October, AND with annual 24 Hour Comic Day.

Just 1 Page #4 & Draw The World Together

Overlapping with the end of the Just 1 Page #3 auctions will be this project, which deserves everyone's support !

The aim:
To create a body of work that expresses who we are as a comics community and by doing that raise funds for the children in the world who will probably never have the opportunity to grow up in the comics world that inspired us as children and enabled us to express that as adults. A way of uniting the whole global comics community in a virtual event that will raise funds for those children less fortunate than ourselves.

The Structure:
There will be two simultaneous virtual events that will coincide at a given time. One will go out to the creative community with a request for artists (and possibly writers) to produce a piece of work. That piece of work will then be emailed back to me where it will be placed on a website. The original plus 5 signed copies will be posted to me. The other part will be a viral email campaign that will go out to the fan community. This will be to raise awareness of the project in hand and to spread the word/create a buzz. Online newsgroups and websites will publicise the project. These two campaigns will then align with two events:
On Monday 26th September pieces of work submitted will start to appear on the 'Draw the World Together' website where it will be available to view by way of potential viewers making a donation to a given charity.
On Monday 17th October a one week auction will begin (through eBay) of all the pieces of original artwork and the 5 signed copies. All funds will again go to the given charity. All news and results will be available on the site in the last week of October.

The Charity:
The designated charity for this global event is EveryChild. EveryChild is an international development charity that works with the most vulnerable and marginalised children in many of the world's poorest countries to enable them to grow up free from disease, poverty and exploitation as valued individuals within strong communities.

You would be correct in thinking that I am barking mad.
Because I am going to do it again next year.

This is mostly due to the support of everyone who has asked me to, and the kings of the British Expo scene - Mike Allwood and Dez Skinn.

However, it is also because I just had a great idea.
You may have noticed that the theme I was suggesting was ANY CHARACTER, ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD ?

Well next year is the Football World Cup in which England will not be competing.
(They may yet be playing in it, but recent trends suggest they will not compete.)
As Just 1 Page features artists or characters representing all the top footballing nations (check the list - Brazil, France, Northern Ireland, Greece, Birmingham, and that other one where they play good footie).

So your theme is now ANY CHARACTER, ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,
DOING SOMETHING LINKED TO FOOTBALL.

This being Just 1 Page, we're quite flexible with the rules, so you won't have to draw football players, but the first person to bagsy Shaolin Soccer gets a special mention. Use as wide a berth as you need (eg newspaper headline, football in the background, Wonder Woman as a Brazil fan, Sven Goran Erikson as a Turnip etc) but please, will someone do Roy of the Rovers, and Hotshot Hamish, and Eric Cantona, and You Are The Ref.

Thankyou for accepting your paypal refund, ignoring the magazines and extra postage that I paid in an attempt to redress the delay in receiving your magazines. I note that you did so without ever contacting me to ask about the delay. I further note that you took longer to acknowledge receipt than my delay in sending the magazines. I hope that you get some enjoyment from the magazine that has cost you nothing and can be satisfied that the investigation almost certainly resulted in the delays to the charity auctions because of eBay action that followed your complaint.

I've settled in at work, and have a week off next week for birthdaying,

AUCTIONS APOLOGY

So, I made the decision to delay the auctions until the end of June.
Why? You may ask.

Firstly I have just come to the end of my first proper two weeks of holiday for a while, and am about to return to the new job I began at the start of May.

I've invested a lot of effort in the job, and I have four weeks to get ready for the full time, five days a week launch of the St Mary's Hospital A&E alcohol liaison work. That's what I do for a living. I know you thought I was a full time comics nerd. Or what Larry Young once flatteringly called an "internet ubiquity" (or was it ominpresence?).

I've realised in the last few days that although doing Just 1 Page is fun, it takes up time which I could better use to relax with Karen. And do selfish things that don't require me to do "stuff" for other people. And besides, no-one bought Just 1 Page, so I would have to find the time to promote it, and before that learn how to promote it.

So, I am putting Just 1 Page auctions on ice until the last week of June (when I have a week off work to have a birthday, see Patti Smith a few times and go up to Bromsgrove for a family barbeque.

This will enable me to set up all the auctions in advance and REALLY think about the running order (and it gives me a bit longer with all the lovely art).

The Hidden Heroes of Just 1 Page

So, as you can see in the previous post, I got all the art in (and two folks pushed the wire over their heads and did the tongue-pulling dance - mentioning no names).

But the epic task of laying out the pages took a lot longer than anyone imagined.

Thanks to Sean Azzopardi for two evenings of me moping around his computer and glowering at his BIG FAT CAT. (And to Steve for what we will refer to as "programming assistance".)

Thanks to David Baillie for a couple of emergency sessions on the old photoshop.

And to Dez Skinn for "an hour" on Bank Holiday Monday that turned into SIX HOURS IN THE COMICBOOK MANSION OF DREAMS!

Now the book is at the printers, and I'll have to wait - like everyone else - until I get to Bristol next Friday.

Or the 25 and a half minute comic (due to misreading my clock and the logistics of getting the pages to everyone)

The day began at 7.24 a.m.
By eight twenty four my arms and hands ached from the two boxes of comics I wanted to give away at the Thing.

At nine twenty four, I had arrived, got my refreshments for the day and had set up the table. And then I started tracking who was here for the 24 minute challenge.

Several folks asked about taking part, so we had a list of thirty by 11.24 - the time I was ready to make announcements, although a few people did not seem to have arrived. (Thinking out loud: consider making the next one as many pages as there are volunteers.)

So it was time for my first bit of shouting of the day.
(I resisted the temptation to sing a few songs from "Calamity Jane". Thanks for asking, though.)

The idea of audience suggestions started to seem less worthwhile as I only had 19 forms handed in by the time I needed them ... so I made up 5 myself and decided to drop the "location" because things like "The Albert Hall" and "Toulouse" just seemed too much to ask anyone to draw.

So, everyone came over to collect their page instructions at 12.15
... in fact, there were 26 people (or teams) which led me to ask Bridgeen Gillespie and Ping Teo to share half a page each (sorry !) and Roger Langridge to do the cover.

At this point I should say that NEXT time, I have a few simple changes to the process. Anyone else got any suggestions?
1) preprinted pages with the page directions AND PAGE NUMBERS (!).
2) a line at the bottom for "creator's name / website"
3) a defined drawing area - as the portfolio tables were mostly taken when we started
4) a loudhailer

Anyway, back to my account of the day ...

The frantic drawing began at 12.30, and most people seemed to be happy to do so at their tables (yes, I have photos of all twenty five pages being drawn). I was going to ask Mike Carey to start the action, as he'd written the rhyming couplets which tell the story, but time and lack of a starting-gun/klaxon/siren/hand-bell meant that I did the shouting.

And at 12.54 ... I mis-read my watch ...
And at 12.55, I announced the end of the 24 minutes.

Some folks were worried that their pages were unfinished
(I told you to use the do not disturb signs !)
but there's very little lacking in the art or storytelling.

I collated the original art pages and made my "little mistake" which resulted in two of the pages have been mis-labelled - see if you can spot which ones !

By one twenty four I was in the i2design photocopy shop on Mile End Rd, who had agreed to produce the comic (and they were extremely helpful and fast and let me do most of the collating) http://www.ink2design.co.uk/contact.htm
Unfortunately, I had a problem collating and numbering the master copy pages, so this took me about half an hour.
But the first copy was in my hand by four minutes to two.

Remarkably, by 2.45 I had eaten lunch and gotten a phone call to say that all 100 copies were ready !

And at 3.24pm the comics were on sale in the Thing Hall.
Technically that's a two hour and fifty four minute comic,
but the art is the important part !

A twenty four page comic, plus a cover, created by approximately 33 people in less than three hours !

And, the cohesion between pages created only from a 48 line "script" is most excellent. Even if someone did add an extra eye to J1P the Alien !

NB I am VERY SORRY for anyone's art that was misprinted or cropped in the quick photocopying stage. That was due to the time it took me to collate things.
The corrected, scanned & improved version will appear in Just 1 Page, to be launched at the Comic Expo in Bristol on May 14th & 15th.

I think the original art should be auctioned as a whole, since it really is a one-off comic, does anyone disagree ?

THE 24 Minute Mini Comic

A World Record Attempt

A comic conceived, written and drawn .. THEN PRINTED ... during the day.
24 artists (or artist and writer teams) attending the "UK Web & Mini Comix Thing" will each spend less than half an hour during the day drawing a page of minicomic. The 24 pages will then be assembled and photocopied and be available for sale by the final hour of the event.

The finished comic will also appear as an insert in Just 1 Page 3 to be published in May 2005 - which will also feature web address & contact details for all 24 Minute Mini Comic contributors.

The approximate itinerary will be as follows
(subject to the UKW&MCT events timetable)

PHASE 1
From opening time (10am) until noon, visitors and exhibitors are invited to fill in a form with key plot elements for the story.

Suggest a location (type of building, a room in the house, geographical place etc)
Suggest an object. If you cannot attend before noon, please email me for a "suggestions form".

These suggestions will be placed into three "hats" and drawn out so that each contributor has four random things to work into their page.

There will be a "protagonist" character to appear in every page linking the story in some way. Hopefully, we'll be getting an archetypal character design sent in.

The theme of Just 1 Page 3 is Battles or Team ups, so I reckon our character should go from page to page interacting with the "guest" characters. The contributors will be able to include a character or person of their own choice. (Any comics character, including their own.)

PHASE 2
Noon to 12.24 - The Draw and everyone assemble.
First 24 names are drawn from hat 1 to decide who draws which hour/page, there will be 24 pages each with a rhyming couplet prepared by professionals. The rhyme will have a very open description of what our character might be doing at that time of day. It is not meant to tell you what to draw, but to be a bit more interesting than "12 noon - dinner"

NEW RULE: Other than any sound effects, the only words on each page will be the rhyming sentence describing the activities of the hour - rather like in Rupert cartoons.

Then each of the suggestions are drawn - like the game consequences - so that contributors know what two things they need to fit into their page.

eg
Page 14: 6pm-7pm, "A sandwich full of pickled jam, what a lucky chap I am!", "SPATULA", the Moon. Roger Langridge.
Page 15: 7pm-8pm, "I'll read before I go to bed, to refill the dream stuff in my head", "POSTBOX", A tool shed in The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. David Baillie.

The layout, format, content of their page is completely up to each contributor. Perhaps the protagonist should be shown walking in at the top left and out at the bottom right of each page - unless someone can think of a better "framing device" :-)

PHASE 3
12.24pm to 12.48pm - THE 24 MINUTE COMIC
To be started by official event starter : then everyone draws their page.
I reckon A4 size would be good enough, but if anyone insists they can do it larger or smaller.

I think this'd be good to do all sat around the central stage area, so that you can discuss events with those doing the hours either side of the one you are drawing. But it could just as easily be done at the contributors tables.
Hopefully we can get someone to film it.

PHASE 4
12.50pm
I will collect all the art, run off to a quiet room to paste it up and then go to a local photocopy shop which has agreed to take part

PHASE 5
By about three o'clock, the 24 minute mini comic should be on sale.

All put together in less than four and a half hours !

J1P3 - 24 Minute Mini Comic contributors

On Saturday March 19th, at
the UK Web & Minicomix Thing
we will be attempting to produce a record-breaking comic.

The 24 Minute Mini Comic to be completed and published on the day.

Each artist or art team will have 24 minutes to draw a page based on certain keywords or phrases, contributed by the audience at the event, like a comedy improv night. At the end of the 24 minutes the pages will be collected, collated & printed and will be on sale before the end of the event.

The final effort will be on sale by 3.00pm and will also appear as a pull-out supplement in Just One Page 3, the charity comic magazine. The final comic will also feature the names and contact details of the creators, their web sites etc.

You do not have to be an exhibitor to take part, all you have to do is pay the entry fee and come and join in - by contributing suggestion to be included in the pages.

Artists will be asked to draw one page (minimum size A5, minimum 4 panels) in just 24 minutes at The Thing. The only other rules will be:
- their page will be allocated to a time of day and the finished collection will tell the tale of a day in the life of our featured character.
- they should feature another character of their choosing.
- they must feature an object and a location suggested by the audience, and randomly drawn from a "hat"
- the only words will be a rhyming couplet loosely describing the events.

All proceeds will go towards the Just 1 Page charity (Childline), and the finished item will be reprinted in Just 1 Page (members.aol.com/just1page/J1P3.htm)

Just 1 Page 2 - The Brits

Just 1 Page: Heroes was a charity comic published for the UK's comic festival in Bristol during the year of 2001. This year, it is back for another issue - this time the theme is British comics characters, and that includes creators. We will be selling the comic at Bristol and auctioning original art to raise funds for the Trinity Hospice charity.

Before I tell you about the process of putting together this comic, I'd like to say why I chose that charity.

In 2002, three of our neighbours were taken ill with various unrelated illnesses.
Within a year, two of them had sadly died, and both were cared for in the Trinity.

Guita was a lovely lady with a life you would not believe ! In her nineties, she felt she had lived beyond her years and was suffering various ailments brought on by her age. She was very low before she went to the Trinity Hospice. The last time I saw Guita, she was battling her way to the local shops, despite not feeling well. She declined any help, although she would welcome us in for a chat and a few odd jobs around her flat. She had been a lively soul in her younger years, a despatch rider during the War, a Soho club girl and then manager of her own club in the Fifties.
She had been to hospital and received treatment, but she was reluctant to accept the home help she needed.
Once she went to the Trinity, she was given a more dignified, comfortable time than she had at home.

She died in April last year.
At her request, her funeral was to be a quiet, secular occasion, and Karen had to make all the arrangements because I ended up with a broken arm that very same week. I got to choose the music, but not to attend and due to my accident, I didn't get to say a proper goodbye.

So, Just 1 Page 2 is a way to say thankyou to the staff of the Trinity Hospice for giving our friend a comfortable farewell. And for me to say farewell to Guita, who I hope is with her loved ones in the heavenly version of that club of hers !

My plan was to give people fliers at the London Festival, perhaps even get some sketches.
BUT it soon became clear that there was not room to move in the small convention hall, and the bar became much more alluring.

Erm, I was side-tracked your honour.

Actually, I did give a lot of the fliers out, but whether any new contributors will come forward is another matter.

On a brighter note, the London Festival was a great experience.

I hope that the positive response to the event allows for an even bigger show next year (not just in terms of size of venue, although that was my only grumble this year). As the traditional comic mart (literally a hundred yards away from the Holiday Inn) today did not seem as busy as usual. It is a shame that certain other organisations could not dovetail their events into what Kev F Sutherland laboured hard to set up on Saturday.

Jonathan Ross was an absolute gem. And I intend to tell him so by the magic of old-fasioned mail - may have to deliver it by hand to the BBC though.

The Viz talk was not as well attended as I expected, but there were a fair number of people who only attended the con for them judging by what I overheard.

I've just thought of another grumble. Directed at the hotel or possibly gents with bladder problems. The flooding of the one toilet that was available in the function area is rather annoying. It was still out of action today.

In 2001, I put together Just One Page an art contribution-driven charity comic book, where each page began with the same three panels: an alien comes to earth looking for a hero and mistakenly ends up at a comic convention. More of that later (or earlier ?), but this is the story of the second Just One Page.

I missed the final UKCAC, which used to be the top comics event in the UK, where Vertigo would hunt and trap British writers and comics artists from far and wide would supplicate themselves at the feet of Tharg.

But a few years later, Kev F Sutherland came on the scene with his Comics Festival near the beautiful spa waters of Avon, in Bristol. Having a passing interest, I took a day trip to the event, where I met Marcia Allass of Sequential Tart and Lee "Budgie" Barnett (named after the Adam Faith character ?). Each year since, I have made a weekend of it, and highlights have included Bryan Talbot's talk on One Bad Rat (so good I've seen it twice since), Al Davison's autobiographical talk (coming to Caption this year), meeting lots of Norwegians, and the annual chance to meet up with friends and new comics folks alike.

Last year, there was a second "annual" comics festival in London, which was JUST SO CONVENIENT !
This got me thinking again. If I could just collect the sketches at London and compile another Just 1 Page at Bristol ...

Well, that was the original plan.

THE COMIC

Solicitation of contributions is now closed (April 18th 2001),
but anyone who promised contributions and has not yet sent anything has until April 30th.

The comic is a compilation of single page strips drawn or written or featuring sketches by volunteers from the "comics community".

THE COMMUNICATION

If I were to send the invitation around to loads of comics people, of course many busy people would ignore my emails.
However, if you support this cause and you know someone who would contribute (or who SHOULD), please pass it on.
Thanks to the people who have offered contributions so far, I'll publish a list in a month or two, with their permission.

THE CONTRIBUTIONS

1) Participants will have an A4 comic page, partially complete, and script outline. (see above)

2) It has three small panels introducing the writer, artist or one of their characters

& one large panel allowing artists to contribute just a sketch and minimal script

(although we hope some will re-draw the whole page).

3) Writers will also be invited to write a script for the page

(writer/artist collaborations welcome !)

4) There is a script outline, which contributors can keep as it is or change for their own needs.

6) Yes. The finished comic will have almost identical pages, with contributors hopefully using their own characters to answer the questions posed in the script.

7) an introductory page will be posted with invitations to contribute.

This will explain why an alien visitor is going around comic book creators asking

"Who is your comics hero?"

8) after the closing date for collaborations (March 2001) a final page will be written to close the story.

9) The book will be published in time for Comics 2001.

To minimise costs, distribution headaches etc involved it will be a black and white fanzine format. Not yet sure if it will be A4 or A5, depends how many pages are contributed I suppose.

FAQ!

WHAT DO I NEED TO DRAW ?

The minimum would be to do a sketch as you might do at a convention, in answer to the question "What is your most favourite comic ever ?"

If you want to add anything to the three small panels or re-draw them, go ahead.

You could just sketch the title character (ie if Kirby's Hulk is your fave, draw the Hulk) or draw yourself or your character naming the fave (ie Spider Jerusalem saying "SPAWN F*KN ROOLS!")

Creator owned characters would be welcome.

For example, if you write and draw Mr Floppy, and you want to have Mr Floppy saying that X Men is his fave (while holding a copy of Xmen #1 or wearing an Xmen t-shirt) that would be fine.

WHAT SHOULDN'T I INCLUDE ?

Well, there is an issue with copyright, but if everyone votes for and draws Batman then perhaps DC will let us have fair use ? In any case, those pages that can not be used could still be auctioned.

WHAT DO I NEED TO WRITE ?

Dialogue is suggested for the three small panels, you can change this to meet your preferences. If you are contributing art, please include some comment as to why you have chosen this comic. If you are a writer (only!) please feel free to fill the last panel with words or give us a script that an artist can complete on your behalf.

If you know an artist who you think would suit your work, please pass it on.

If you don't want an artist to illustrate your script, let me know

DO I HAVE TO FOLLOW THE SCRIPT ?

Be creative (since that's why I'm asking you !) If you want your character to refuse to answer the question fine.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER REGULATIONS ?

It has to be acceptable for a "family" audience so no swearies.

CAN I NOMINATE MY OWN COMIC ?

Of course.

"JUST ONE PAGE" CHARITY COMIC CALL FOR DONATIONS

A benefit comic for Comic Relief. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and The Cartoonists Rights Network. To be published and sold only at the Bristol Comics Festival, May 27th & 28th 2001, in Bristol, England.

Comics artists and creators are invited to donate JUST ONE PAGE to this compilation comic.

Unusually, donations will be based on a repeated single page, with only the contributors' imagination and their answer to the question "Who is your comics hero?" changing from page to page. A framing sequence set at the Bristol Comics Festival will place these pages in context. A sort of Convention Sketchbook with a plot.

The book itself will serve as an illustration of the wide range of styles and talents and genres that make up the comics community - ranging from the major companies to small press and mini-comics.

All proceeds from the comic will go to the above charity organisations, and hopefully, original art from the project will be auctioned at the customary Comics art Auction during the weekend.

Some well-known and up and coming contributors have already offered to take part, names to be announced 31st January 2001.
